Upgraded to PaperMC v1.21.5 and More!

Even though it’s still in beta we upgraded all our servers to PaperMC v1.21.5. Unfortunately, this finally caused our rather ancient permissions plugin on Amplified Moosh to finally say, “Okay, that’s enough — I’m out”.

Due to Amplified Moosh being an adventure server with therefore minimal permissions requirements, we’ve been rather stubbornly sticking with the rather ancient (and basically abandoned) GroupManager permissions plugin that we used from the very beginnings of this server (2013). Honestly, we have been expecting this for quite a while now and are a little surprised that it took this long for it to give out on us. About a year ago we preemptively tried LuckPerms, but the “easy” migration utility failed completely, and we really didn’t feel like learning a whole new permissions plugin, as well as manually converting everything over, etc., so we’ve just been in pray/delay mode all along. Unfortunately, PaperMC v1.21.5 was the final nail in the coffin.

LuckPermily (pun definitely intended), it turns out that manually converting (because the automatic migration still doesn’t work) from GroupManager to LuckPerms isn’t all that terrible or complicated (at least not for Amplified Moosh). So we’re now that much closer (which is now VERY close) to be just about as future-proof as possible. We only have 1 or 2 legacy plugins that may cause some issues in the future, but there are easy workarounds for them should they start causing issues.

Of course, like everyone we’re a little nervous with PaperMC’s recent hardfork away from SpigotMC (and therefore Bukkit), but keeping the server updated to more recent and better supported plugins should minimalize issues as the separation between Paper and Spigot inevitably grows. I think our plugins are now popular enough that someone will rewrite them for Paper should the need arise.
